Löwenapotheke/Kräutergewölbe

Whilst the corner house at 18 Hauptmarkt was built in the city centre sometime after 1403, this building at 17 Hauptmarkt was erected between 1474 and 1476. Notable architectural features include the building's steep gable roof, which has survived to this day, and its painted wooden beam ceilings which date from its original construction.

Appearing in records since at least 1478, the Löwenapotheke has proven to be one of the oldest pharmacies in Germany, having been located at 17 Hauptmarkt from 1561 right up until the 1990s. Former pharmacist August Laurentius was a close friend of the Schumann family.
