Planitz Castle Park

The Planitz Castle Park is a monument of garden art and represents the landscape garden of the 2nd half of the 19th century. It is one of the few preserved new creations by Carl Eduard A. Petzold. As an outstanding personality of garden art, his work is typical of a late classical-romantic style of English landscape gardens in Germany.

The 7.3 hectare landscape park is part of the Planitz castle ensemble with castle, park, church and cemetery as well as Lukaskirche and the Planitz municipal cemetery. Although only small in area, the park gains in size and diversity thanks to a succession of interlocking spaces.

The effect is enhanced by the skilful use of topographical features, a backdrop-like structure of trees and shrubs and the targeted selection and arrangement of plants, especially tree species and their shapes. This creates images that change colour in the course of the seasons.
