Theatre "Gewandhaus"

Situated on what is today the Hauptmarkt, the Gewandhaus was constructed between 1522 and 1525 to serve as the Clothmakers’ Guildhouse. The representation of a pair of eye-glasses in the late Gothic gable façade bears testimony to this era: four master clothmakers of the guild would check the quality of locally produced fabrics in this impressive building.

The ground floor of the Gewandhaus was subsequently given over to the men of the town watch. In 1823, the Gewandhaus assumed the role of civic theatre. Its last structural overhaul took place in the mid-90s.

The Gewandhaus is still the home venue for the Plauen-Zwickau theatre ensemble. The genres of musical theatre, drama, ballet and concert all come together under its roof. Because the Gewandhaus is currently undergoing major renovation work, it remains closed to the public until further notice. The Plauen-Zwickau theatre group is therefore performing at alternative venues during this time.
